Background of the study
Household energy choices play a pivotal role in environmental sustainability. In Abakaliki, a diverse mix of traditional and modern energy sources is utilized, ranging from firewood to electricity. The environmental impact of these energy choices is significant as reliance on nonrenewable sources contributes to air pollution and deforestation, while modern alternatives offer cleaner energy options (Nwosu, 2023; Ezeani, 2024). This study examines the patterns of energy consumption in households, the socio-economic factors influencing these choices, and the subsequent environmental effects. It also highlights the importance of promoting renewable energy adoption to reduce the carbon footprint and enhance public health. By exploring energy efficiency, emission levels, and the sustainability of various energy options, the research provides a critical assessment of current practices. The integration of policy, technology, and community behavior is essential for developing strategies that reduce environmental degradation while ensuring energy security (Nwosu, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Household energy consumption in Abakaliki is characterized by a mix of traditional fuels and modern energy sources, leading to considerable environmental challenges. The continued use of firewood and fossil fuels contributes to deforestation, air pollution, and adverse health outcomes. Despite the availability of cleaner energy alternatives, adoption rates remain low due to economic and infrastructural barriers. This study seeks to identify the factors that influence energy choices and assess the environmental impacts resulting from these decisions. Addressing these issues is critical for developing policies that promote sustainable energy consumption (Ezeani, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To examine current household energy consumption patterns.
To evaluate the environmental impacts of various energy sources.
To recommend strategies for promoting renewable energy adoption.
Research questions:
What energy sources are predominantly used in households?
How do these choices affect the local environment?
What factors influence the shift toward renewable energy?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional energy sources significantly harm the environment.
Economic constraints limit the adoption of renewable energy.
Policy interventions can improve renewable energy uptake.
Significance of the study
The study will provide insights for policymakers and environmental agencies to design interventions that promote sustainable energy practices. It underscores the environmental benefits of transitioning to cleaner energy sources, potentially reducing deforestation and pollution in Abakaliki (Nwosu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating household energy choices and their environmental impact in Abakaliki Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Renewable Energy: Energy derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly (Ezeani, 2024).
Nonrenewable Energy: Energy sources that are finite and deplete over time (Nwosu, 2023).
Carbon Footprint: The total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual or entity (Ezeani, 2024).
